A film about a Burmese-American student finding himself in the land of his ancestors is scheduled to premiere at the Cayman Islands Film Festival (CayFilm) on July 1.
“Mudras Calling” tells the story of Jaden, a US-raised music student, who travels to Myanmar to do research for his thesis on Burmese traditional music but ends up finding much more than that as he explores the history of the country, the mystery of his birth parents, and the possibility of falling in love with someone across a vast cultural divide.
The film was written and directed by Christina Kyi, who drew on her own experiences as a Burmese-American in making the film. She also fills the film with stunning shots of Myanmar’s natural and historic landscape. The ‘mudras’ in the title of the film refer to the hand gestures in Buddhist iconography, which symbolize the forces that pull Jaden back to his homeland.
As Jaden gets to know Myanmar and ultimately falls in love with it, audiences are likely to do the same.
According to the film’s Facebook page, it may be a while before “Mudras Calling” gets a Myanmar release date.
A recent post says: “The cinema queue is long, and we don’t have a Myanmar release date yet.”
