The feminist artist who once challenged the patriarchy by painting sexy ladies on men’s longyis is throwing a series of three parties this weekend to celebrate the opening of her new exhibition in Yangon.

Chuu Wai Nyein’s Vérités Alternatives includes paintings that trace the journey of a woman from cloistered Mandalay to liberated Paris and her facing up to the expectations placed on specifically on women in each place.

She says her art invites viewers to consider “the many ways society controls and scrutinizes women more than men, the ways that women resist, and the way that culture is evolving.”

The exhibition runs from Friday morning to Sunday night at No. 2 Art Area – a home that has been converted into an art gallery, an outdoor event space, and a haven for Yangon’s street artists.

On Friday and Saturday nights, starting at 7pm, art fans will get to party among the paintings to tunes spun by Yangon DJs. Entry, drinks, and snacks are all free.

Then, on Monday night, Chuu Wai Nyein is throwing an Exhibition Closing Party at Eclipse Bar in Myanmar Plaza. Entry will be free, and guests will get a 30 percent discount on drinks.

Chuu Wai Nyein says her decision to combine her exhibition with a series of parties is a way of drawing more people toward art and getting them to talk about it.

“Not many young people come to exhibitions, but they party often. So throwing parties will attract them to visual art,” she told Coconuts Yangon.

She added: “Another thing is that people talk more, discuss more, and share their feelings more within a party. So I want people to feel free and share about the exhibition.”
