‘Can I Kick it?’ Feel-good finale of Myanmar’s current parliament feels like 1990 Tribe Called Quest song

Unity. Peace. Harmony. Love. Music.

These were all part of the final session of Myanmar’s last army-dominated legislature, as Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy prepares to take its seats on Monday.

The final sesh included jokes by one of the speakers and a karaoke sing-a-long in the afternoon as new MPs mixed with old.

It was about as cool and harmonious and loving as a transfer of power to an opposition party can get, which naturally made us think of the early 90s hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest and their call and response classic ‘Can I Kick it?’

‘YES YOU CAN!’

A few sample lines that capture the mood:

“Before this did you really know what life was?”

“Come and spread your arms if you really need a hug.”

“Like a box of positives it’s a plus love.”

Needless to say, it’s Friday everybody. Enjoy!
