Award-winning photos give intimate glimpse of life in Yangon’s LGBT community

A lesbian couple watch movies from a laptop on the floor of their flat. A transgender performer gets ready for a show. The images are an intimate look into a society where being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is still taboo.

These photos, and more, are now on display as part of the third &PROUD exhibition at Yangon’s Myanmar Deitta Gallery, after winning the yearly contest held to celebrate the city’s LGBT+ community.

Shwe Wutt Hmon’s startling intimate images of a lesbian couple going about their everyday life in Yangon won first place, worth K300,000, while Hongsar Wadee’s photos of a transgender performer took second, and K150,000.

The contest also invited couples to send in selfies – Phyo Thit Luu and Jan Waiyan both won K100,000.

The images will be on display at Myanmar Deitta through May 15.
