5 highlights of the Yangon Street Art Festival

This week, the Institut Français de Birmanie joins forces with Myanmar street artists to hold a citywide festival celebrating urban culture in Yangon. From dance classes to hip hop workshops and parties, the full schedule has a lot to offer, but here are five of our favorites.

Hip hop dance workshop with Bintou Dembele (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

French hip hop dance queen Bintou Dembele (see above video for concrete proof of how classy she is) gives a masterclass on the form, its spirit and techniques. Reserve a place in advance by emailing intern.ifbirmaine@gmail.com

Graffiti workshop (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

French street artist Remi Assezat and Myanmar counterpart Thu Myat host a workshop on graffiti and work on pieces to be displayed at Pin Lel Studio for the closing party on Saturday. Reserve a place in advance by emailing intern.ifbirmaine@gmail.com.

Talk: The faces of urban art in Yangon (Wednesday)

Meet some pioneers of the local scene at Sanchaung bar The Rough Cut. Wunna Aung, Thuta’ill and 9micro will talk about the intersection of hip hop and street art culture. See the Facebook event. (Photo: The Rough Cut)

Closing party (Saturday)

An all-day urban art fiesta featuring exhibitions and dance battles from 1pm until 7pm followed by hip hop bands and DJs until late.
