Yangon donut lovers got their first taste of Krispy Kreme donuts this afternoon at a press briefing ahead of the company’s grand Myanmar opening on Sunday.

Representatives of Krispy Kreme and its local partner Doughnut Group announced that the new shop in the Times Link shopping center will offer 16 donut varieties, including the company’s signature Original Glazed donut. The Original Glazed will sell for K950 (US$0.61) or K7,600 (US$4.88) for a dozen.

“Our mission is to create the most awesome donut experience imaginable,” said James Phillips, Krispy Kreme’s international marketing director.

Krispy Kreme’s expansion to Myanmar, which builds on an existing 1,400 retail shops in 32 countries, has been in the making since 2015.

“We feel now is the right time and are excited to become part of the local community,” Phillips said.

When another Krispy Kreme representative asked reporters at the event for their feedback on the donuts, one local reporter said: “I think it is very good, but it is a bit sweet.”

Doughnut Group general manager Arjuna Yoganandan said donuts would not be available for delivery for between three and six months after the Yangon shop opens, as the company wants customers to get acquainted with the shop and its staff.

Doughnut Group employs 80 local staff and is equipped to produce 1,200 donuts per hour. Customers can watch donuts being made in the shop’s factory, which is surrounded by glass walls, and a neon sign saying “HOT NOW” is illuminated while fresh donuts are being produced.

Krispy Kreme opens on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 8am. It is located in the Times Link shopping center, at the corner of Link Road and Dhammazedi Road, in Bahan Township.
