5 things to do in Yangon this weekend: July 15

Eat at a buzzy new Asian fusion place in Pazundaung

Rau Ram, which just opened on Yay Kyaw Road, is getting a lot of hype and for good reason. It’s delicious – check out our review – and not too expensive. As in, mains for K12,000. Asian fusion done well, in a cozy setting. Recommended: beef brisket, fried chicken, fish curry.

Rau Ram is located at #64B Yay Kyaw Street. Open until 11pm but last orders are at 10pm.

Antique furniture fair at Merchant Street (All weekend)

Photo: Supplied

AVA Vintage Furniture is a pretty good spot for picking up genuine antiques – from traveling chests to art-deco teak chairs. The firm is hosting an exhibition of rare items at the Living Restoration house on Merchant Street that was recently restored by Turquoise Mountain. From owner Kaung Htet’s private collection, they range in age from 70 to 100 years.

Living Restoration Space is located on Merchant Road. Opening night on Friday from 5pm until 7pm. The exhibition continues from 10am until 6pm on Saturday and 10am until 2pm on Sunday.

Watch a debate at Orchid Hotel (Saturday)

An interesting topic for this week’s debate hosted by the Democratic Voice of Burma: Myanmar’s movie industry, and how to save it. Timely in light of the recent ban on Twilight in Burma, a film following abuses by the former military regime in ethnic areas.

Orchid Hotel. 10am.

Listen to poetry readings at The Rough Cut (Saturday)

Two young Myanmar women, Mae Yway and Cho Pain Naung, present the launch of their collaborative poetry book, titled You and I, at Sanchaung café-bar The Rough Cut. Stop by for readings – there’s English translations – as well as plenty of drinks.

The Rough Cut, #19 Minn Street. 6pm.

Watch a documentary at the British Club (Sunday)

Throughout July, Sunday nights are documentary night at the British Club. This week it’s the turn of Disney documentary-movie Chimpanzee, which follows the life of a baby monkey orphaned in the jungles of the Ivory Coast, and his struggle to survive on his own.

British Club. Starting at 7pm.
