3 Joy-inspiring places for coffee and cake at Myanmar Plaza

Myanmar Plaza, the massive new mall on Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, has plenty of shopping options: Mango, Clinique and the like. But those in the know go there for a different reason. The chocolate cake.

Trademark Café

The shelves at this second-floor café are heaving with the good stuff: New York cheesecake, dense chocolate cake, fluffy Red Velvet slices. The Indonesian brew is legit, too, though pricey at about K4,000. But it’s the majestic brownies – crispy on the outside, dense and squidgy inside – that keep the customers coming.

We’re pretty excited by this variation, too.

Mr Jones’ Orphanage

Now, the twee décor of this place – a Thai import – will make you feel like a grownup at a teddy bear’s picnic. It also has a totally weird name. The key is to look past that. Or embrace your inner 9-year-old.

The unpretentious cakes – from Victoria sponges, mud pies displayed around the seating area in glass cases – inspire sheer childish delight.

This Kit-Kat cake (K4,500) is undoubtedly king, with rich, bitter chocolate icing, and a sprinkle of M&Ms. The sponge tastes pleasingly homemade.

Also, they serve the most adorable coffee you’ve ever seen.

Artisan Amour

This café, tucked away at the back of the mall on the ground floor, is a hidden haven well worth the search. Small but tastefully furnished, with comfy seating, wi-fi and plenty of plugs, Artisan Amour makes for a relaxing pit-stop on any shopping trip.
