Angelina Jolie set to visit Myanmar’s displaced communities

The UK embassy in Myanmar has issued a statement on what exactly Angelina Jolie is doing here.

The actress arrived in Naypyitaw on Wednesday morning, where she was pictured meeting government officials and generally looking gorgeous in the quite drab capital.

According to the embassy, which is helping co-ordinate the visit, Jolie will stay four days, meet President Thein Sein, talk with activists and “carry out field visits to displaced people”.

Presumably, though this is unconfirmed, that means a trip to troubled Rakhine state, where tensions between Buddhist and Muslim communities have left hundreds of thousands in dismal camps.

The embassy said her visit follows a personal invitation from opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who she has been in touch with since a summit on ending sexual violence in 2014.

In the statement, Jolie said: “I am looking forward to meeting with many people including women’s groups, civil society, displaced people and youth, to learn firsthand from them about their concerns and hopes for the future of their country. With elections on the horizon in November it is an important moment for people to exercise their democratic rights and help to address the fundamental issues critical to a peaceful future.”
