5 things to do in Yangon this weekend

Eat: Yamasaki

We’re checking out this fairly slick-looking new Japanese spot this weekend. Plenty of sushi and sashimi and sesame-drenched fish, judging from the pictures we’ve seen.

#28 South Horse Race Course Road, Tamwe Township. Call 01546692.

Drink: Party at the French Institute (Friday)

(Editor’s note: We screwed up and said this was happening last weekend. It wasn’t. Forgive us.)

The French Institute’s garden parties are back. Local punk rock band No U Turn are on stage from 8pm, followed by a progressive house DJ from 10pm. They promise to keep the party going until 2am.

French Institute, #340 Pyay Road.

Watch: Story-telling workshop at Pansodan Scene (Saturday)

Got a story to tell? Turn up to this workshop, run by the authors behind Yangon Echoes, a new book about people living in the city’s colonial-era buildings. They’ll go through the basics of what makes a good story and how to make people listen.

Pansodan Scene, Pansodan Road, Middle Block. 1pm.

Buy: Books at the world’s largest floating bookshop (Saturday and Sunday)

The most surreal book-browsing experience you’re ever likely to have. The world’s largest floating bookshop, MV Logos Hope, stocked with a wide range of international titles, including kids’ stuff, has docked in the Ahlone International Port Terminal. It opens to customers on Saturday and runs until October 15.

Ahlone International Port Terminal. Open from Saturday at 1pm.

Reflect: Public Debate on communal violence at Orchid Hotel (Saturday)

Things are bound to get heated at this week’s public debate, organized by the Democratic Voice of Burma. The topic is how to end communal violence before the elections.

Orchid Hotel, #91 Anawratha Street. 10am.
