Calling all theme park enthusiasts and thrill chasers — Malacca is getting its largest water park in a couple years, when Splash World at Harbour City makes its debut. The 500,000 sq ft space — slated to open to the public in the first half of 2020 — will sit between two towering 30-story buildings, on the 14th level of the ship-shaped development in Malaysia’s UNESCO World Heritage city.
A project by Singapore’s Hatten Land done in collaboration with resort operator Samsung C&T Corporation and water slide designer Polin Waterparks, the RM200 million initiative (US$49 million) is already being hailed as the world’s first “sky” theme park. It is also set to be one of the region’s biggest water parks, with an aim of hosting up to 5,200 visitors a day.
Featuring more than 50 attractions connected by a man-made river, the four-story park will include everything from extreme indoor and outdoor rides and a kids’ play area to a Sky Beach and a Cosmic Waters light show with circus stunts after the sun sets.
For a sneak peek at what to expect, here’s a quick rundown of several rides.
There’s the King Cobra, a single or double ride through twists, turns, and vertical slopes; Surf Safari, with a 40-degree sloped entrance and parabolic design; Aquatube, for a sliding experience in total darkness; Uphill Navigatour, which shoots you through turns and inclines with a psychedelic light show; and Freefall, a slide that pretty much does exactly what its name suggests.
But if two years seems like an eternity to wait for your next shot of adrenaline, check out these other theme parks across Southeast Asia for superhero shenanigans, freaky roller coasters, and all sorts of splashin’ fun.
