With Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations around the corner, many in the Muslim community have started making the necessary preparations and looking for sacrificial animals.

The occasion honors Prophet Abraham’s act of sacrifice as written in the Quran. It is also not a time to show off to the poor that you can afford luxurious food.

But one company is going against the grain by offering the option to sacrifice premium cows so that families can enjoy Wagyu beef and donate a portion of it to the needy. It has drawn criticism from some people for appealing to the rich and for its “absurd” pricing.

“People questioned the purpose of the charity and asked why we didn’t do regular slaughter that could have more cows for the korban,” Asia Harvest Agro boss Najib Jalil told the press this week. He added that the purpose of the Wagyu packages was to provide a platform for those who could afford it.

Asia Harvest Agro is selling the Wagyu beef at a whopping RM29,999 (US$7,000) for 50kg. It said that the cow will be slaughtered according to local Islamic laws and can be delivered straight to the buyer and the poor.

Hari Raya Aidiladha falls on July 30. Choice of cattle for sacrifice usually includes sheep, goats, camels, and cows.

Najib said he imports Wagyu from countries like Australia and Japan.
