Woman under investigation for lodging false police report after claiming son was abducted

For way too many times, our Facebook news feeds have been alight with anecdotes of creepy child abductors waiting around malls to steal away unaccompanied kids from unwary guardians.

Urban legends or tall tales to ensure that parents keep close watch over their children at malls, they’re terrifying nonetheless. But really, you don’t have to go around adding to the panic by lodging false police reports.

A 35-year-old woman is being investigated right now for doing just that — she claimed that someone tried to kidnap her child. According to her report, she was shopping at Bukit Panjang Plaza with her 5-year-old son in a pram, when an unknown man tried to abduct her son by pushing the pram away. Apparently, the man fled after she managed to intervene.

The police, however, suspected that she lodged a fake report. Officers from Jurong Division noticed a number of inconsistencies and established that the woman had provided false information. They’re currently carrying out investigations against the woman.

“The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information,” they wrote in a statement.

If the lady is convicted, she can face a maximum jail time of a year and/or a $5,000 fine.
