As the oldest (and still operational) fire station in Singapore, Central Fire Station remains a historic landmark that serves as the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s base in the city.
The national monument wasn’t always as pretty as it is right now — after all, it was first built in 1908. Some architectural sorcery and careful restoration later, the fire station now accommodates a fleet of modern (and much bigger) firefighting and rescue vehicles, with a museum to boot.
Who better to be the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery museum guide than a grizzled firefighter who actually grew up in the Central Fire Station’s ancient walls? WO2 (V) Yunnos Bin Shariff fought fires and rescued lives for 41 years. Add another 10 years to his role as the station’s museum guide, and that’s 51 years of his life that Encik Yunnos spent within its revered enclosures.
