A fierce blaze broke out at a sixth-storey HDB unit at Block 886B along Woodlands Drive 50 last Saturday, but thanks to the efforts of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighters, it was quickly extinguished.

Alas, the job was not over for one firefighter from Yishun Fire Station. Upon hearing that there were four pet cats trapped in the still-smouldering house, an officer grabbed a fresh breathing apparatus set from another firefighter and rushed back in to rescue the animals. All without any hesitation whatsoever, despite appearing visibly worn-out from fighting the blaze (and the fact that he already did his job in putting it out).

Unfortunately, only two of them survived the ordeal after receiving veterinary treatment. The other two didn’t make it out alive, even though firefighters were said to have performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on them. Nonetheless, that’s two feline lives saved out of the four that could have all easily perished.

“On that note, I would like to state here that what you and your team did was really a Heroic act,” wrote Zul Monsor, who chronicled the incident on his Facebook page.

“Clearly you and your team did it with compassion, responsibility and honor. Very honorable deeds that only Almighty can repay. Keep up the good work.”

Now, if only more people knew about the dedication of SCDF personnel instead of calling their jobs “low class”.
