On Wednesday morning, the police performed a dramatic rescue at a flat in Bukit Panjang, pulling a foreign domestic helper to safety away from the fifth-floor corridor railing. In a video that made its rounds on social media, the 24-year-old woman was seen walking across the ledge outside the flat.
According to Channel NewsAsia, it is believed that the woman had accidentally locked herself in a room and decided to climb out of the flat to get in through the front door.
The police confirmed that they were notified around 8am of a case of a woman standing on the ledge at Blk 241 Bukit Panjang Ring Road.
Dressed in shorts and a tee, the helper cautiously walked towards another woman — believed to be her employer — who emerged from the flat gesturing for the helper to approach her. At the end of the ledge, with no space left to stand, the helper misstepped, but her employer managed to grab a hold of her, preventing a potentially tragic, messy end.
Left dangling precariously off the corridor railing, the helper was stuck in the position for about 20 seconds before police officers and a neighbor came running to help haul her to safety.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force stated that no one was taken to the hospital.
