International news agency Al Jazeera released yesterday a documentary delving into the complicated legacy of founding father Lee Kuan Yew and the repercussions of last year’s controversial Lee family feud/Oxley Road dispute.
Produced by local filmmakers Lynn Lee and James Leong, Singapore: The House that Lee Built – People and Power highlights an exclusive interview with 32-year-old Li Shengwu — the eldest of LKY’s youngest child, Lee Hsien Yang — the Harvard economist who made headlines of his own for a private Facebook post (which leaked to the public) that described Singapore as having a “pliant court system”.
Currently in “self-imposed exile” at Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the filmmakers talked to him, Shengwu is still wading through legal troubles after the Attorney-General’s Chambers launched contempt of court proceedings against him last August.
According to his comments in the 25-minute video, which are his first public remarks on the saga since last December, he has no plans to return to Singapore anytime soon.
Other notable figures featured in the short include former Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng, former presidential candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock, and former activist Roy Ngerng, who’s now living in Taiwan after he was sued by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and ordered to pay S$150,000 in defamation damages for writing an article about the shortcomings of the Central Provident Fund and accusing PM Lee of misappropriating the monies.
Listen to what they have to say in the video below.
