Be warned: Messages offering free $500 Ikea vouchers are scams

The latest “free voucher” scam to hit our shores has set its sights on Ikea Singapore customers. Offering S$500 vouchers for kiasu Singaporeans, the scam comes in the form of messages circulating online and on messaging apps.

Obviously, those messages contain awful spelling and grammatical errors — and of course they sound too good to be true. Recipients are asked to take part in a survey to purportedly receive the S$500 voucher.

To stop the scam from spreading false hopes and dreams (and horrible grammar), the Swedish furniture company released a statement on its Facebook page on Tuesday to say that it is “not associated with these activities” and they are “not initiated by Ikea”.

To avoid falling for scams like these, just be extra wary of any free giveaways or vouchers that come too easily, like last year’s NTUC scam. Fight against your innate kiasu instincts (we’re looking at you, Tampines residents) and never divulge any personal information for such “freebies”.
