Multiple tip-offs sent reporters from Shin Min Daily News scrambling to a shophouse along Upper Serangoon Road on Friday, where a hundred people were reportedly found residing in one cramped, filthy abode.
Not all in one room, of course. The publication noted that about 100 male and female tenants — mostly foreign workers from China — were living on two floors of the three-story space. The first floor of the unnamed shophouse holds an eatery.
The report went on to describe the constricted conditions of the living quarters, with double-decker bunk beds squeezed into the dirty rooms, according to the tip-offs. For S$550 a month, tenants get access to a kitchen, toilets, bathrooms, and air-conditioning. Wi-Fi too, and we all know that’s all we need to sustain ourselves, cramped spaces be damned.
The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has since informed The Straits Times that it’s investigating the alleged breach of rules on the subletting of residential property. The maximum number of unrelated occupants allowed in any private residential property is six, according to URA rules.
Enforcement action will be taken against the person or people responsible if “the infringements are ascertained”, said URA to ST.
