Standoff at Sembawang ends with arrest of hostage-taker and boy’s mother

The hostage crisis that manifested since Tuesday evening in Sembawang finally came to an end after a dramatic 17-hour standoff.

The 39-year-old man who took his girlfriend’s son hostage in a flat at Block 462 along Sembawang Drive has since been apprehended after police managed to enter the barricaded unit around 12pm today. Officers from the Special Operations Command broke into the fifth floor unit and rescued the unharmed 2-year-old boy, who has since been taken into police custody.

Two arrests have been made, according to multiple reports. The hostage-taker was arrested for Wrongful Confinement and drug-related offences, while his girlfriend (the boy’s mother) was also cuffed for suspected drug offences.

According to Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC Dr Lim Wee Kiak, the boy is the youngest of four siblings, and the mother is a widow. Her three other children are living with their grandmother in Woodlands.

Police investigations are ongoing.
