After last week’s turtle hatchlings sighting at East Coast Park, a hawksbill turtle was spotted laying eggs along the shores of the beach on Wednesday (Aug 23) night. That marks the second rare sighting of the critically endangered marine creature in two weeks.
After a member of the public tipped off the National Parks Board (NParks) about the turtle, its officers rushed over to monitor the scene and document the process. They kept the area dark and quiet, as the turtle was searching for a nesting site.
Once it found a suitable place, the officers shone a light from its back to capture the process on film and for data collection. In total, the turtle laid 141 eggs, which have since been relocated to a quieter area, as NParks said the original nest was in a “high risk” area with heavy foot traffic and bright lights.
NParks will continue to monitor the eggs closely.
