Shisha ban in Singapore takes effect today

Yesterday, the Ministry of Health reminded that the shisha ban in Singapore begins on Nov. 28.

The import, distribution and sale of shisha are now disallowed in the Republic via the Prohibited Tobacco Products Regulations made under Section 15 of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act.

Any person who contravenes the ban is liable to a fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both. A subsequent conviction is punishable by a fine of up to $20,000 and 12 months in jail, or both.

As a transitional measure existing licensed tobacco importers and retailers who import or sell shisha tobacco will be allowed to continue important and retailing these products until Jul. 31, 2016, to allow them ample time to deplete their stock and restructure their business.
