Heavy rains across Singapore yesterday triggered flash floods in the west and uprooted at least one tree in the east.
Afternoon motorists and pedestrians in Choa Chu Kang found themselves ankle-deep in floodwater, while a large tree crushed a parked car at a Bedok North housing estate, photos and videos posted online show.
Singapore water agency PUB confirmed that flash floods happened on Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1 and Jurong East Street 32 during intense heavy rains at 3:20pm, preventing roads from being navigable by motorists for about 20 minutes.
PUB about an hour earlier had warned of heavy rain in many parts of Singapore, including in Bedok’s high-flood risk areas Chai Chee and New Upper Changi Road, where water levels had risen by 90%.
“The heaviest rainfall of about 93mm was recorded over one hour in the western part of Singapore. This is about a third of the projected average rainfall of 318.6mm for the month of December,” PUB wrote in a statement Monday evening. “Singapore is currently experiencing the Northeast Monsoon period, with more wet weather expected this month.”
There were no reported injuries or fatalities.
A video taken from inside a car driving through murky brown waters near Choa Chu Kang’s Teck Whye neighborhood showed someone standing at a bus stop in ankle-deep water.
Images of the flood situation in Jurong East could not readily be found online.
At Bedok North Street 3, an uprooted tree fell onto a black Mercedes-Benz and a metal railing, photos showed. The area was cordoned off by the police.
An eyewitness told The Straits Times that town council staffers were also at the scene to clean up the area.
