Top 10 destinations Singaporeans want to visit, according to TripAdvisor

As we head into June, it’s also the school holiday season, when many Singaporeans go for a mid-year getaway with their loved ones.

Just where are they planning to visit and stay? TripAdvisor, the world’s largest site, recently revealed the travel trends for Singaporean travellers according to their searches on the site.

The results: for the months ahead, Singaporeans are researching short to medium haul destinations. They are most interested in four and five star hotels and prefer the outdoor and cultural activities, and of course, shopping.

The TripAdvisor site data showed that nine of the 10 most popular destinations for Singaporeans in the coming months are within Asia:

Most searched destinations by Singaporeans

1. Hong Kong, China

2. Bangkok, Thailand

3. Taipei, Taiwan

4. Seoul, South Korea

5. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

6. Bali, Indonesia

7. Batam, Indonesia

8. Johor Bahru, Malaysia

9. London, United Kingdom

10. Melaka, Malaysia

“With the increase in supply of low cost airlines serving the local market, many of the top searched destinations by Singaporeans are just a short flight away,” said Jean Ow-Yeong, TripAdvisor spokesperson in Asia Pacific. “Given Singaporeans’ love for food and shopping, it is no wonder Hong Kong, Bangkok and Taipei are amongst the favourite destinations of Singaporeans.”

For their upcoming trips, TripAdvisor site data shows that Singaporeans are an active bunch with one-quarter of searches on outdoor activities, followed by cultural experiences (17 percent) and shopping (11 percent). They also have a preference for luxury with more than 70 percent of hotel searches looking at four or five-star properties.

“The trends reflect what the TripAdvisor community is looking for in a holiday: adventure, culture and unique experiences. For those planning a trip to any of these popular locations, visit the TripAdvisor Destination pages, a great resource that will allow you to check out top-rated hotels, restaurants and attractions, as well as the weather and maps,” she added.

Earlier this year too, TripAdvisor also shared that there is a surge in the number of women from Southeast Asia willing to go on trips alone or organising women-only vacations.

In the report titled ‘Women and the World Travel Survey’, a survey of over 600 women from Southeast Asia, it is heartening to note that more women are willing to embrace independent trips and that 75 percent of them reported to be more satisfied with their life and gaining greater awareness of the world through travel.

The survey also found that one in three women travel alone for leisure, while two in five women go on leisure trips with other women. This implies that the tourism market could possibly expand even more should they tailor and target to the needs and supply of the female consumers.
