Winnie euthanised, only one white tiger left at Singapore Zoo

Fans of the Singapore Zoo’s white tiger exhibit will be saddened to know that a second tiger had to be put down earlier this month. Winnie, one of the two white tigers at the exhibit, was euthanised on Aug. 12 due to a tumour that had developed in her jaw bone, leaving her terminally ill.

The Wildlife Reserves Singapore explained that a recent medical assessment determined that the tumour had intensified, and the decision to put Winnie down was best made to prevent further distress. They’ve assured that her keepers and veterinary team had been providing the utmost care and support for Winnie throughout the development of the tumour the past few months.

The white tigers exhibit is one of the Singapore Zoo’s star attractions, originally featuring three white tigers brought in from Indonesia’s Taman Safari in 2001 when they were only barely two years old. It remained so even after cleaner Nordin Montong was killed in the enclosure in 2008 in an apparent suicide.

Winnie was 14 years old when she was put down, and is survived by her brother Omar. Her sister Jippie had also fallen terminally ill and was euthanised in March last year.
