Jerry the mouse has been kidnapped from Sentosa, leaving Tom the cat without his perennial frenemy.
The inflatable mascot of the famous cartoon character, measuring 1.5 meters tall, was displayed on Siloso Beach as part of Warner Bros’ WB100 Celebrating Every Story event in Sentosa, but it went missing on Monday. It’s likely Jerry was mouse-napped late on Sunday evening or early on Monday morning, when the mascots were deflated after the exhibition closed at 9pm.
A Warner spokesperson told The Straits Times that it was sad to see the iconic duo split up. “Tom cannot exist without Jerry, and Jerry cannot exist without Tom. They have to be together, that’s how they have been for 83 years,” he said.
A police report has been lodged, prompting an official investigation.
The mascots are based on the first localized version of the show, which has the cat-and-mouse pair eating durian and exploring Singapore. The mascots also notably depicted the pair enjoying durian on the beach.
The first episode of the localized series, which aired in August, saw Tom enjoying the king of fruits and Jerry becoming a durian-hater until he had his own green eggs and ham moment.
Could it be that whoever stole the Jerry mascot was a superfan who wanted to get their hands on such priceless memorabilia?
At any rate, unless the mascot is returned or recovered, it’s unlikely we’ll see a replacement Jerry until the exhibition closes on Nov. 26, as Warner said that it would take weeks to make a new Jerry mascot, which costs several thousand dollars.
