Getting hitched comes at a cost — everyone knows that. Even the most low-budget of weddings could set you back several hundred dollars; and if you want a fairytale ceremony, be prepared to shell out tens of thousands for one of those fairy-lit romances.

For those soon to be married though, you’ll have to add a couple more dollars to your budget, as the Registry of Marriages (ROM) has announced that marriage registration fees will undergo a price hike from Saturday (July 1). If you or your partner (or both) are a Singapore citizen or a permanent resident (PR), you’ll have to pay $42 for registration, up from the current fee of $26.

Unfortunately for foreigners (who currently pay $128 on weekdays, $198 on weekends, and $298 on popular days) the fee will increase to a flat rate of $380 — that’s almost three times more than the cheapest option now.

Previously, the last price review was conducted in 2005. According to an ROM spokesman, this price hike is in line with the increasing operational costs, and foreigners get the brunt of it ’cause ROM’s priority is to maintain affordable marriage fees for Singapore citizens and PRs.

But if you find yourself struggling to pay the fees, ROM has options to assist couples with financial difficulties, and will waive fees on a case-by-case basis. After all, love is priceless… right?
