Here’s what happens when a streaming service tries to add some local flavor and have some pun with Singapore’s neighborhoods.
Recently, Netflix has organized shows into categories leaning into wordplay with names such as “Laughter is Aljunied,” in reference to one of Singapore’s eastern neighborhoods. Then there were also shows that “Could Have Happened In Yishun.”
It was enough to puzzle one Redditor to ask just what the heck was going on. As others pointed out, “Laughter is Aljunied” consisted of comedies such as The Good Place, Archer and Ghostbusters; and therefore, “Laughter is all you need.”
Yishun? It listed horror shows such as Stranger Things, American Horror Story and Dead Silence listed. As locals know – and Yishunites are forced to attest – the neighborhood enjoys an unsavory reputation what for all the cat killings, murders, and ghost sightings that seem to go down there.
Not everyone was on board. Some sayers of nay felt the Netflix puns ranged from “bad” to “fucking depressing.”
