Singapore has nothing but admiration today for the rail station workers credited with rescuing a girl who appeared ready to jump from an elevated train track.

A day after the unidentified female commuter was brought back to safety at Yio Chu Kang station, skilled netizens yesterday identified railroad staff members Effendi Hashim and Norjan Binte Abdul Rayman from photos and videos that surfaced online.

A picture showed them crouching down to console the girl who was sitting on the tracks, with Effendi putting his hand on her back. Hundreds of comments have since flooded in to applaud their good deed.

“A picture that tells there’s always hope and help. Step forward to help if need be, in whatever capacity. A life saved…. whole Humanity is saved. Thank you abang (brother) and akak (sister),” Adnan Abdul Hamid wrote.

“This scene is very moving. They didn’t rush to remove the girl but instead consoled her patiently. My [thoughts] are with the girl,” Charmaine Lee said.

“The mere sight of this man putting his hand over the student like his own daughter and consoling her bleeds my heart. Well done Sir and Madam!” Sarifudin Sapari wrote.

Train operator SMRT said Monday that the uninjured girl was saved at around 2pm. Eyewitnesses had pushed the emergency button alerting ground staff after the girl climbed over the platform screen door to get onto the tracks.

Videos circulated online on Monday showed onlookers watching as the girl stood leaning over the railings. Police and Singapore Civil Defence Force officers were also present at the scene.
