An e-scooter rider in his 20s was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail yesterday for his assault on a pedestrian on Mar 19 this year. Jonathan Mark Tan Wei Wen, 24, had demanded Joshua Shane Ng Cheng Wei, 29, to compensate him for the damages to his ride when he swerved to avoid hitting Ng, but the latter refused to fork out the money.

According to The Straits Times, the court heard that Ng was walking across a zebra crossing in the vicinity of Block 110 Rivervale Walk around 1am that day when Tan zoomed from behind on his e-scooter and caused Ng to fall. Tan also fell from his ride and injured his leg when he swerved to avoid ramming into Ng.

In the process, the strap of his e-scooter was damaged, and he asked for Ng to compensate him for the damages. But Ng refused and walked off, so Tan caught up with him and punched him in the head. Ng fell to the ground and Tan pinned him down, dealing repeated blows to his head and ignoring attempts at intervention from passers-by.

Tan’s assault resulted in Ng suffering bleeding in his nose and mouth, and fractures in his nose and right eye socket. In the aftermath, Ng apologized and agreed to pay for the damaged vehicle.

When the police arrived, Tan was at the scene. He made partial restitution of S$250 to Ng, whose medical costs came up to more than S$505, ST noted.

Tan will start his sentence on Jan 3. For the offence of causing hurt, he could have been jailed a maximum of two years and/or fined up to S$5,000.
