Talk about first-world problems — some folks aren’t happy at all that Ikea Singapore switched its regular (and long-time favorite) vanilla soft-serve to soybean ice cream.
On Monday, the Swedish furniture retailer made the announcement that one of the ways the brand is supporting a more sustainable environment is by doing away with dairy ice cream at their restaurants. Instead, patrons who want a cold treat after all that homeware shopping can enjoy the guilt-free option of noshing on a “100% plant-based, dry and gluten-free soya ice cream”. Made with non-GMO soybeans, even.
A relatively small gesture for the Singapore outpost of the world’s largest furniture retailer, but a big one for the lactose intolerant and/or vegan customers.
But totally switching one flavor for another did not sit well with a significant portion of patrons — presumably the very same ones who complained to Ikea about the declining quality of its chicken wings.
Will they ever switch back though? Unlikely. The flat-pack furniture chain has gone wide with vegan-friendly options across the world with not only soy soft serve, but also with vegan caviar made from kelp seaweed and veggie hot dogs made from kale, lent, ls and carrots. Ikea’s mission to provide more sustainable options for all shoppers also extends to phasing out all single-use plastic products by 2020.
