A prestigious school facing a major backlash over a homophobic assembly has suspended the teacher responsible.

The Hwa Chong Institution today said it disciplined a staff member who showed a sex ed class of 16-year-old students a slideshow of fabricated statistics smearing the LGBT community as well as a “conversion therapy” video.

“We are aware of the incident which took place during a presentation on sexuality where a staff member incorporated content outside the scope of the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Sexuality Education curriculum into his slides,” the secular, all-boys school said in a statement.

It said that the unnamed faculty member has been reprimanded and suspended from teaching sex ed classes.

“The views presented were the individual staff’s personal perspectives and not representative of the position of the school or MOE,” it added.

The presentation, which happened Wednesday for Secondary 4 students, was not approved by the school.

The presentation included statistics under “community health” touting absurd and incendiary claims such as “58% of homosexuals have problems with intestinal worms,” among others equating them to pedophiles.

They were said to be “false” and made up by a “troll account.”

A video from a local Christian organization showing a man’s supposedly successful journey through so-called conversion therapy was also played.

LGBT+ advocacy group Heckin’ Unicorn today updated that the school had an emergency meeting with the Secondary 4 students this morning to address the situation after the presentation was leaked over the weekend.

The school heads, principal and vice principals, were present except for the staff in question.

“The school has allegedly tried to explain that what the counselor did doesn’t reflect his character […] We disagree: the extreme lengths he went to broadcast hateful messages to students reveal his true character,” the group said.
