Hawkers at Beauty World food centre abruptly told to cease operations; no explanations given

If the top floor food centre at Beauty World Centre used to be your favourite haunt, you’d best get over there for nostalgia’s sake soon. The Upper Bukit Timah hawker centre seems to be facing an uncertain future, what with recent reports of the stalls having to close up shop soon.

According to Channel NewsAsia, several stall owners have expressed concern over the management’s unclear instructions regarding the food centre. Apparently, a ‘trustee’ (a representative for the hawkers) told them that they would have to cease operating their businesses by February 11, but gave no further explanations.

Left in limbo, the hawkers are unsure if they have to pack up their bags for good. One stall owner said that the trustee of the food centre is reportedly unwilling to renew its license.

By last weekend, about one-third of the stalls appeared to be empty — a couple had displayed signs or informed customers on social media that they were ceasing operations.

Since planning the day around meals is one of Singaporeans’ favourite pastimes, people were understandably upset over the news.
