Gatecrashing at a Chinese wedding is when the groom, together with his groomsmen, has to participate in torturous playful door games at his bride’s family home before he can receive her. These gatecrash activities come in all varieties, but it’s usually the groom and his mates who get the attention when they dress up in elaborate themes. All for fun and games, of course.
We’ve seen a Chinese emperor and his entourage, a muscular march of gladiators, and a political campaign to win over the bride. These creative gatecrashes were spotlighted in the media, but none quite like Benny Ong, a 32-year-old entrepreneur who captured the attention of Nee Soon GRC Minister K Shanmugam with his political-themed one.
Dressed in white from head to toe, with the usual embellishment of orchid garlands, Ong and his group of friends arrived bearing signboards stamped with his face and the logo of a PAP-esque party. Since the gatecrash took place in the Yishun/Sembawang area, they were obviously campaigning for Yishun GRC.
Somehow, news got to the Law and Home Affairs Minister about the faux election campaign, and he cheerily sent the couple well wishes for their wedding, joking that he was “always looking out for people to help in our work in Nee Soon”.
What a way to commemorate this special day.
