Every major family reunion — be it Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas, or Hanukkah — can be quite a drag. Tightening family bonds aside, every occasion that sees the gathering of relatives will almost always feature annoying little slights and offensive offhand comments directed at each other, but especially (and vexingly) so for the younger folks involved. All dripping with ‘the best intentions’, of course.
Two years ago, a much-needed Google Docs was launched to crowdsource a massive list of microaggressions faced during Lunar New Year, and the compilation is as relatable today as it was in 2016. This year, however, have a bit of fun with all the thinly veiled banter during gatherings with a handy CNY Bingo Table, courtesy of Nanyang Technological University comms undergrad and travel videographer Yeo Tze Hern.
The game is easy. Cross out oft-heard phrases and actions (including, but not limited to, calling you by your sibling’s name and asking when you’re getting married) on the five-by-five table — the first one to score five boxes in any direction wins.
