Update: A 65-year-old bus driver was arrested for a rash act causing grievous hurt, and SBS Transit confirmed that one of their bus drivers was filmed in the leaked CCTV footage of the bus crash in Bukit Batok.
Surveillance footage has surfaced online showing a bus nearly landing on a man before it fell to its side after a collision at the interchange in Bukit Batok yesterday.
The video, which has been shared by several online pages today, showed a man in uniform being thrown onto the ground together with a road barricade before the bus flew over him and landed on its side. The service 945 bus had reportedly hit another bus coming from the opposite direction yesterday afternoon, injuring 17 people.
“Omg that lucky person. Just inches away would be [a] disaster. Hope they are okay,” viewer Matheesha Ranasinghe said in reaction to the clip.
The man on the ground appeared to be wearing a uniform of the SBS Transit transport operator. The company responded to Coconuts’ queries after this story was published, saying that their employee was receiving treatment at the hospital.
The man, who was also a bus driver, was standing on the pavement when the crash happened, according to SBS.
“Our Bus Captain who was standing on the pavement was hurt by one of the buses. He remains warded at the hospital. We are in close contact with his family and are rendering all assistance,” senior comms vice president Tammy Tan said.
The timestamp of the video showed that the crash happened at 5:02pm, just minutes before the Singapore Civil Defence Force, or SCDF, were alerted. Fourteen people were found with major injuries and were taken to the hospital, said SCDF. Most of them were reportedly discharged today.
According to Bukit Batok MP Murali Pillai, one of the buses was entering the interchange while the other was exiting the area when the collision happened.
Several other photos and videos of the scene showed emergency responders attending to passengers, including those who were on the toppled bus, which had its windshields completely shattered as a result of the impact. Several poles had to be removed from the bus to rescue the passengers, SCDF said. The bus was later towed away at around 11:30pm as people watched from the side.
