Vehicles were left partially submerged in flooded roads today after strong winds and torrential downpours hit most of Singapore since early this morning.

Floods were spotted in places including Jurong Town Hall Road, New Upper Changi Road, and the Pan Island and East Coast Parkway expressways. Emergency responders were on the ground in some areas, helping motorists out of their vehicles.

“Taken along upper Changi road. Thank goodness for the SCDF who immediately came to help people with their stuck vehicles!” read one video caption posted to Reddit that showed several vehicles stuck on Upper Changi Road.

The national water agency PUB issued flood alerts from 7:40am, saying that water levels on New Upper Changi and Bedok South roads were rising “above 90%.” Water levels at the Bedok Canal Sub Drain rose to 100% capacity around 8am.

Other clips posted online showed trash bins floating into roadways and water rising at bus stops.

The National Environment Agency or NEA had forecast today’s downpour to start from 6am and end midday. It updated its heavy rain warning this morning, announcing that the heavy downpour will continue through noon. The map showed heavy rains across the west side of Singapore – Jurong West, Pioneer, Tuas, Boon Lay – in the past hour.

“Moderate to heavy thundery showers with gusty wind are expected to continue over many areas of Singapore between 11.00am and 12.00pm,” the advisory read.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue over most of the city through the end of June, with daily highs of 30C and lows averaging 26C.
