Five live leopard geckos were discovered in a Singapore-registered car at Woodlands Checkpoint on Friday (June 2). The vehicle — driven by a 51-year-old Singaporean man with a 32-year-old Singaporean female passenger — was found to be concealing the geckos inside pillows at the rear passenger seat.

The duo were directed for further checks at about 3.55pm, and the animals were seized upon discovery, according to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.

FYI, keeping wild animals such as exotic amphibians, snakes, and lizards is not allowed in Singapore. Anyone convicted of importing animals or live birds without a permit from the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) can be fined a maximum of $10,000, jailed up to one year, or both.

This case has been referred to the AVA. Investigations are ongoing.
