A fire broke out at a building in Geylang Bahru this morning, wrecking a dance studio and damaging the building’s roof.

The blaze had already spread across the second floor of the building at 70A Geylang Bahru when the Singapore Civil Defence Force, or SCDF, were alerted to it at around 6:35am. They spent an hour trying to put out the fire, which caused the roof tiles and windows to crumble.

“Upon SCDF’s arrival, the fire was found well-alight on the second floor of a two-storey premises,” SCDF said in a statement. “Firefighters had to exercise caution as roof tiles directly above them started collapsing.”

Photos and videos that circulated online showed debris falling from the ceiling, window panes completely disintegrated and thick black smoke spreading to nearby public housing blocks. There was also a town council office nearby but fear not, that building was not affected, SCDF said.

Fire engines were parked outside the area while around 40 firefighters scrambled to extinguish the flames using four water jets. They continued to water down all the burnt surfaces to prevent the fire from rekindling. Eleven emergency vehicles were at the scene.
