A 17-year-old boy died after a basketball hoop fell on him at a court in Bedok South.

Police told reporters today that they were alerted to the incident near Block 18 Bedok South Road at 8:43pm. The unidentified teenager was unconscious when taken to the nearby Changi General Hospital, where he died of his injuries. The East Coast Town Council management in charge of the area said the court has been closed for thorough checks.

“Our heart goes out to the victim and his family. We will work closely with the relevant agencies to provide support and assistance to them,” a statement by the East Coast Town Council said.

The boy was injured by a basketball backboard that collapsed and fell onto him. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that paramedics performed CPR on him while on the way to the hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.

The East Coast Town Council is assisting the police with the investigation and is also appealing for eyewitnesses to come forward. The management will also conduct checks on other basketball courts in the neighborhood.

A two-minute video posted by YouTuber King Kook today showed the backboard fallen to its side while a man tries to resuscitate the boy. Bystanders were there while emergency responders attended to him. If you have witnessed the incident, please contact the Bedok Police Division at 1800-244-0000.
