An 80-year-old local man was handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigations after he tried to smuggle in an immense number of contraband cigarettes into the country.

It was on Sunday that Immigration & Checkpoint Authority officers detected “anomalies” while scanning the man’s two bags at the Singapore Cruise Centre. Upon inspection, officers uncovered a total of three cartons, 34 packets and 21 loose sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes — all of which were concealed in assorted boxes inside the bags. A pretty ambitious feat for an octogenarian.

If the old man gets convicted, he’ll be paying a pretty hefty price for the offenses of failing to declare the cigarettes — it’ll be a $200 fine per packet if it’s his first offense.
