Durex teased sweet new tastes, but Singapore smelled something fishy

Given the obsession with hyperlocal flavors in everything we put in our mouths, it made sense when a global condom maker announced a new line of rubbers designed for a tropical palate.

Durex teased three new flavors – the very durian Mao Shan Wang, iced-dessert goodness of Singapore Chendol, and a Botak Coconut Sherbet yesterday that raised some eyebrows – until people looked at the calendar and had a chuckle.

“COMING SOON: Rediscover what it means to love local, with our limited edition Singapore’s Favourites flavoured condoms launching in just 7 days! Available for a limited time only,” the post said, including a photo of its condoms in three different colored packages – yellow, green, and brown.

Some not blown away by the announcement were quick to taste the mischief behind the provocative campaign, noting the launch date.

“7 days is April fool’s la! Come on!!” Chan Weihao Jonathan wrote.

After this story was published, Durex told Coconuts today that fans should keep close to them to find out if it is part of a prank.

“Durex has been on a mission to get consumers to take action and spark conversations around a safer, healthier and more satisfying sex life. What better way to do this than kicking it off with our limited time only local flavours, featuring our favourite treats? How were these flavours chosen? Is this an April Fool’s prank? More delicious details coming on 1 April, watch this space,” a Durex Spokesperson wrote.

It wasn’t surprising considering Durex’ history of April Fool’s stunts, which have included teasing Mala-flavored condoms back in 2019.

Others bit into the fun anyway, requesting all sorts of flavors including bubble tea, coffee, rambutan, salted egg yolk, and even local favorite laksa.

Asked if it was pulling yet another prank, Durex Singapore played it cool and kept mum in a statement that little hid its delight at the attention.

“Durex has been on a mission to get consumers to take action and spark conversations around a safer, healthier and more satisfying sex life,” company spokesperson Jason Khor told Coconuts. “What better way to do this than kicking it off with our limited time only local flavours, featuring our favourite treats?”

It also didn’t want to deflate its ongoing campaign with a sharp prick of truth.

“How were these flavours chosen? Is this an April Fool’s prank? More delicious details coming on 1 April, watch this space,” Khor continued.
