Last Thursday, a disturbing video emerged on social media, displaying a rather violent incident of school bullying. The scene, filmed at Westwood Secondary School, showed a group of students punching, kicking, and making fun of a fellow classmate, who sat alone at his desk with his mobile phone.

Some of the bullies’ awful actions included one student telling his friends to “teach” the boy a lesson, two students hurling chairs at him, and one student slapping the victim before overturning his chair, pushing him to the floor, and continuing to rain down kicks and punches.

The viral video garnered plenty of riled up reactions against the perpetrators and empathy for the victim, although several commenters pointed out that bullying has always been a problem in schools and such incidents are only surfacing more often now due to the ever-present phone camera.

You can watch the video below, but be warned of the violent display.

In response to the incident, principal Abdul Harris Sumardi told The Straits Times that he was aware of the appalling incident, which took place on Feb. 9. The six Secondary 3 students involved have since been counseled, and the school has reportedly taken the “appropriate disciplinary measures”.

“We are also working with their parents to help the students learn from the incident,” he added.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time a camera has captured a fight in a secondary school classroom. Last September saw another viral incident of bullies assaulting a boy at St Hilda’s Secondary School, and a study that was carried out in 2015 put Singapore in the unenviable spot of having the third highest rate of bullying among students in the world.
