As Chinese Singaporeans get ready to usher in the Year of the Ox next month, a herd of the stout bovines has already invaded Chinatown, turning it into an unintended farmhouse.
Dozens of plastic-wrapped cattle have been stored in the open along a barricaded stretch between Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road since Sunday, photos of which have since made their way online to attract jokes from self-appointed comedians.
“Chinatown now has a cow farm,” jokester Foo Hing Chau said in a comment shared hundreds of times.
Every year, decorations go up across Chinatown ahead of the New Year celebrations, replete with ornaments themed after the next animal up on the Chinese zodiac. The town’s getup for the Year of the Ox, however, didn’t strike many as aesthetically pleasing. The statues, some brown and others in a strange pale yellow, looked like they were grazing on the grass in the middle of traffic.
“Are there no standards for the cows this year?” a Bong NyunJew wrote.
Singapore is left to celebrate the festive season on its own as Chinatown’s usual festivities including a bazaar have been canceled this year to prevent crowding.
