Risky Business: Singapore man goes to jail for hooking up condos for sex

A man has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for helping a pimp rent dozens of condos for use by prostitutes and their clients.

Sheng Qing, a 24-year-old permanent resident, will also pay a S$15,000 fine under sentencing terms handed down yesterday. His mini-empire of commercial sex real estate came crashing down with the June 2019 arrest which ended his brief partnership with the panderer identified only as “DT.” Several sex workers from China were also taken into custody.

“While not closely involved with the work of the prostitutes, (his) assistance was indispensable to the wider criminal enterprise,” Deputy Public Prosecutor Goh Yong Ngee said in court. The name and location of the condominium were not disclosed.

Neither DT’s identity nor nationality has been made public, nor have the authorities disclosed what penalties he faced. The authorities made no mention of whether the women were working willfully or had been victims of trafficking.

Sheng met DT in 2018 through advertisements seeking help renting condo units. In return for handing the keys over to DT, who paid for the units’ rents, Sheng received S$300 to S$500. Prosecutors said he rented out nearly 30 units before his arrest.

Goh marked him as a “habitual and persistent offender” who remained unfazed by the police probes into his risky business.
