Singapore came through with heaps of donations after the Turkish Embassy put out a call for help for the victims of the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake disaster.
The embassy last night thanked those who personally came down to drop off bags and bags of necessities and announced that they would have to pause accepting any more donations due to the substantial intake over the past few days.
“In the wake of the earthquake disaster, the support we have been receiving in Singapore as in-kind donations cannot be described in words,” the Embassy wrote in a statement last night.
Singapore’s generosity is “fully” respected, the embassy said, adding that they will make full use of the donations and intends to send them to Turkey and Syria on Monday.
Officials say at least 17,000 lives have been claimed by the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday.
The Embassy put out a call for donations on Tuesday for items such as clothing and food at their Shenton Way office before redirecting them to a Genting Lane collection point due to the large number of donations.
Snaking queues were spotted outside the office with good samaritans lugging boxes, trolleys and bags full of items.
Local volunteer group Kampong Kakis said this morning that they have successfully gathered and donated 12.1kg of winter supplies. They said it was the “most tedious offload so far.”
The Singapore Civil Defence Force is also donating their time and risking their lives by assisting in rescue efforts under “Operation Lionheart.” Their advance team of 20 officers already helped rescue a boy who was trapped under rubble while another team of 48, including search and rescue teams and doctors, has also been deployed.
