The Turkish Embassy in Singapore has called on the city-state for help to provide for victims of Monday’s deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

The embassy put up a notice on their social media last night requesting local samaritans mail or drop off basic necessities such as clothing and food at their Shenton Way office as soon as they can.

“Volunteers who are willing to send in-kind assistance to people in need in Turkiye affected by the devastating earthquakes are kindly asked to send the attached items,” the notice wrote.

“Please kindly send new/or well used products for hygiene purposes,” it added.

They listed a bunch of items including winter clothes for adults and children, raincoats, boots, sweaters, scarfs, socks, as well as other supplies like tents, blankets, sleeping bags, canned food, diapers and women’s hygiene products.

Officials say at least 7,700 people have been killed by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck central Turkey and north-west Syria on Monday morning. Another 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck again later that afternoon.

Since then, rescue workers have been scurrying to save the victims stuck under the rubble of fallen apartments and buildings.

While they have reportedly rescued more than 8,000 people in Turkey alone, they have to race against time to rescue more as temperatures continue to drop below freezing.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) last night also said they have deployed an Operation Lionheart contingent consisting of 20 SCDF rescue-trained officers, paramedic specialists and a doctor to assist in the rescue operation.

They also brought along search and rescue equipment such as “cutting/breaking/lifting equipment, life detection devices and fibre-optic scopes.”

If you have any items you would like to donate, you can mail or drop them off at the Turkish Embassy, 2 Shenton Way, SGX Centre 1 #10-03 Singapore 068804. Its opening hours are from weekdays 9am to 1230pm and 2pm to 6pm.
