A portion of the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) was closed to traffic for about two hours last night due to a burst water pipe, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.  The incident, which occurred around 9:10pm, saw a section of the eastbound tunnel between the Central Boulevard exit and the Marina Boulevard entrance temporarily shut.

Repair works went on for about two hours until the tunnel reopened at 11:25pm.

An eyewitness told The Straits Times that all four sprinklers in the four lanes were activated, and vehicles were driving through the water. Another eyewitness revealed to Channel NewsAsia that he was completely drenched when he rode his motorcycle through the MCE tunnel.

LTA is currently investigating the cause of the incident.

But this isn’t the first time the MCE has experienced indoor “rain” — in May last year, sprinklers were unintentionally set off, giving motorists a free car wash and motorcyclists an unwanted shower.
