This afternoon, some cars along the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) experienced a bout of underground ‘rain’ when sprinklers were unintentionally set off. Around 12.57pm, the water-based firefighting system before the exit to Fort Road was accidentally activated, soaking the eastbound tunnel.

But despite rumors circulating on social media, the expressway was not closed off, said The Straits Times. According to the Land Transport Authority, the system was quickly turned off after it was proven that there was no fire.

“Normal traffic condition resumed at about 1.06pm,” LTA said. “LTA is investigating the cause of the incident. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to motorists.”

Perhaps the one silver lining in this soggy situation? Some drivers probably got themselves a free car wash. Sort of.
