Six individuals who risked their lives to save others in a deadly fire that killed three have been recognized for their heroism.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force yesterday awarded the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award for alerting the fire force and evacuating residents after a massive fire engulfed a Bedok North block weeks ago.

The Good Samaritans honored were Cheng Ping Chen, Cheng Ping Peng, Goh Yun Yi, Neo Jia Wei, Willie Toh Hock Beng, and Chiong Kai Weng.

SCDF said they evacuated an elderly resident and others to the nearby Heartbeat@Bedok mall upon witnessing the thick black smoke.

Unfortunately, the fire which broke out on the morning of May 13 at Block 409 Bedok North Avenue 2 killed three, including a three-year-old child.

The SCDF that day said the devastation was due to “a vast accumulation of combustible items,” and that four people were found unconscious in the flat. A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a 35-year-old man and the toddler later died in the hospital.

None was identified.

A 34-year-old woman was still recovering at Changi General hospital.

Sixty people in total were evacuated from the block, SCDF said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
